Barry Goldwater Scholarship 2022 – The Barry Goldwater scholarship aims to support a continuing source of highly qualified scholars to work as scientists, mathematicians, and engineers.
The Barry Goldwater scholarship provides $7,500 per year for educational expenses to sophomores and juniors majoring in math, science, and engineering.
The purpose of the award is to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers and advanced degrees in these fields. For the next three years, upward of 450 Goldwater Scholarships will be awarded nationwide.
Barry Goldwater Eligibility Requirements
- Full-time sophomore or junior pursuing a degree at an accredited institution of higher education during the application year.
- Minimum GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- S citizen, U.S national, or permanent resident.
- Desire to pursue a research career in natural science, mathematics, or engineering.

Candidate Profile
- Outstanding academic performance, especially in the major, as evidenced by a GPA of 3.8 or higher.
- Commitment to pursuing an advanced degree in science, engineering, computer science, technology, mathematics.
- Potential to make a significant contribution to one’s field through a commitment to research.
- Significant participation in undergraduate research here at Purdue and/or through research internships elsewhere.
- Extracurricular activities and/or work experience (e.g., internships) consistent with the applicant’s intellectual interests and career goals.
Barry Goldwater Application Components
- Online application
- Three letters of recommendation from faculty members
- Research essay no longer than 3 pages, including bibliographic information and references.
- Certified transcript (or transcripts)
- If applicable: Copy of the permanent resident card (formerly known as the Alien registration card) and a letter of intent to become a U.S citizen.
Barry Goldwater Selection Criteria
Selectors seek students who demonstrate a strong commitment to a career in math, science, or engineering; display intellectual curiosity and intensity; and possess the potential for significant future contributions in their chosen field.
It is expected Goldwater scholars will pursue advanced degrees. Students who plan to study medicine are eligible only if they plan a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor in private practice.
Barry Goldwater Scholarship Requirements
- All applicants must first complete the pre-application available (as of September 7th).
- Schedule an appointment with Alicia Hayes, the Goldwater Campus Representative.
- Submit a completed online application that includes the following:
- A research essay
- Three recommendation letters
- Transcripts from all colleges attended
- (For non-U.S citizens) copy of the nominee’s permanent resident card, if the nominee’s citizenship status is a permanent resident.

How Competitive Is Goldwater Scholarship?
Competition for the scholarship is intense. Colleges and universities are allowed to nominate only four of their undergraduate students per year to receive the final scholarship, making it the premier award in the US conferred upon undergraduates studying the sciences.
What Does The Goldwater Scholarship Cover?
To help cover costs associated with tuition, mandatory fees, books, room, and board. A sophomore who receives a Goldwater Scholarship receives up to $7,500 in each of his/her junior and senior years.
Is Goldwater Scholarship Taxable?
